Increasing environmental awareness – Biodiversity guidebooks launched at Majjistral Park

Reference Number: PR210633, Press Release Issue Date: Apr 01, 2021

Two guidebooks on flora and fauna have been launched to enable citizens and tourists to understand and appreciate the biodiversity at the Majjistral Nature and History Park.

During the presentation of the books by Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli and Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia, it was explained how the books will serve as a guide for the flora and fauna that can be found at the park.

To facilitate the use of the books, the flora guidebook is divided according to the colour of the flowers. The fauna guidebook is divided according to the type of creature. Complementing the photographs are descriptions, providing the information that goes hand in hand with what visitors can see at the park.

The educational books also tackle the protection of the ecosystems and geology.

Minister Aaron Farrugia said that Malta, also through the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), is addressing various aspects linked with biodiversity.

“Biodiversity conservation and proper management of our ecosystems is an integral part of our work towards climate change mitigation”, said Minister Farrugia, while explaining that for this reason, and in order to increase awareness on the natural heritage of the park, the ERA sponsored the publication of these books on the flora and fauna found at the Majjistral Park, including a number of unique species found only in the Maltese islands.

He added that various works are also ongoing by Ambjent Malta and other entities to further enhance the biodiversity of the Majjistral Park, an area of significant historical, archaeological and environmental value.

Minister Miriam Dalli described the publication of these books as part of the effort to encourage people – in particular children – to learn more about Malta’s natural habitat.

“We want to encourage children to explore and learn about biodiversity from walks in nature parks”,  said Minister Dalli. “Through these publications we want to help educate our children and understand the importance of protecting biodiversity. The flora of the park has adapted to the harsh conditions of scarce soil, lack of water, extreme heat and strong winds.”

She added that the flora gives life to many creatures, which can grow, nest and thrive in this area.

From his end, Majjistral Park Chairperson Sammy Vella said that the park serves as a recreational spot for visitors, an inspiration to artists and a research ground for scientists. This is because it offers material for research on untouched natural ranges. “It is therefore important that everyone remains sensitive to the environment surrounding them, and follow the established paths”, said Mr Vella.

ERA Team Manager Stephen Saliba highlighted that the authority not only supports NGOs in the running of parks through the provision of technical guidance, but also assists through funding for the implementation of educational material for the general public.

The books have been published in both Maltese and English and can be purchased from the Majjistral Park Visitors Centre.

Insaħħu l-għarfien ambjentali – Imnedija kotba gwida dwar il-bijodiversità fil-Park tal-Majjistral

Biex aktar Maltin, Għawdxin u turisti jkunu jistgħu jifhmu u japprezzaw il-ħajja ambjentali li teżisti ġewwa l-Park tal-Majjistral, ġew imnedija żewġ kotba gwida li jagħtu tagħrif dwar il-flora u l-fawna.

Waqt il-preżentazzjoni tal-kotba mill-Ministru għall-Enerġija, l-Intrapriża u l-Iżvilupp Sostenibbli Miriam Dalli u mill-Ministru għall-Ambjent, it-Tibdil fil-Klima u l-Ippjanar Aaron Farrugia, ġie spjegat kif il-kotba se jservu ta’ gwida għal flora u l-fawna li wieħed jista’ jiltaqa’ magħhom waqt mixja f’dan il-park.

Il-ktieb dwar il-flora huwa mqassam skont il-kulur tal-fjuri, filwaqt dak tal-fawna huwa mqassam skont ir-razza ta’ dawn il-ħlejjaq. Il-kitba hija mżejna b’għadd sabiħ ta’ ritratti li jgħinu li dak li jkun jifhem aħjar, jagħraf dak li għandu quddiemu u japprezza aħjar il-ġmiel li jżejjen dan il-park naturali.

Il-kotba edukattivi jagħtu gwida ta’ kif wieħed għandu jġib ruħu fil-kampanja sabiex l-ekosistemi different u l-ġeoloġija ta’ dan il-park ikunu mħarrsa.

Il-Ministru għall-Ambjent, it-Tibdil fil-Klima u l-Ippjanar Aaron Farrugia qal li Malta, ukoll permezz tal-Awtorità għall-Ambjent u r-Riżorsi (ERA), qiegħda tindirizza aspetti differenti relatati mal-bijodiversità.

“Il-konservazzjoni tal-bijodiversità u l-ġestjoni xierqa tal-ekosistemi hija parti integrali mill-ħidma tagħna lejn il-mitigazzjoni tat-tibdil fil-klima”, qal il-Ministru Farrugia.

Hu spjega li għal din ir-raġuni, u sabiex jiżdied l-għarfien dwar il-wirt naturali tal-park, l-ERA ffinanzjat il-pubblikazzjoni ta’ dawn il-kotba dwar il-flora u l-fawna misjuba fil-Park tal-Majjistral inkluż numru ta’ speċi uniċi li jinsabu biss fil-Gżejjer Maltin.

Il-Ministru Farrugia żied jgħid li għaddejjin ukoll diversi xogħlijiet minn Ambjent Malta u entitajiet oħra biex ikomplu jtejbu l-bijodiversità tal-Park tal-Majjistral, żona b’valur storiku, arkeoloġiku u ambjentali sinifikanti.

Il-Ministru għall-Enerġija, l-Intrapriża u l-Iżvilupp Sostenibbli Miriam Dalli ddeskriviet il-pubblikazzjoni ta’ dawn il-kotba bħala parti mill-ħidma biex in-nies, b’mod partikolari t-tfal, ikunu jistgħu jitgħallmu waqt li qed iżuru l-park.

“B’dan il-mod qed ngħinu lit-tfal jigħallmu dwar l-ambjent naturali ta’ pajjiżna mhux biss mill-kotba tal-iskola imma barra fil-miftuħ ukoll”, qalet il-Ministru Dalli.

“Permezz ta’ dawn il-pubblikazzjonijiet, m’aħniex qed ngħinu biss biex jitkattar l-għarfien imma qed nuru li l-bijodiversita hi ħajja li rridu nipproteġu. Il-flora tal-park irnexxielha tadatta ruħha għal kundizzjonijiet iebsa ta’ ħamrija skarsa, nuqqas ta’ ilma, sħana estrema u rjieħ qawwija.”

Il-Ministru Dalli spjegat li fuq din il-flora jiddependu għadd kbir ta’ ħlejjaq li jgħixu, jikbru u jbejtu f’dan l-ambjent.

F’kumment li ta, iċ-Chairperson tal-Bord tal-Park tal-Majjistral Sammy Vella qal li dan il-park qed iservi ta’ rikreazzjoni għal min iżuru, ta’ ispirazzjoni għall-artisti, u ta’ għajnuna għax-xjentisti. Dan għaliex joffri materjal għar-riċerka fuq meded naturali mhux mittiefsa. “Għalhekk hu importanti li kull min jiġi hawn joqgħod attent li jimxi ma’ mogħdijiet stabbiliti u ma jgħaffiġx fuq ħxejjex biex b’hekk ma ssirx ħsara lill-ambjent ta’ madwarna”, qal is-Sur Vella.

Minn naħa tiegħu, l-Amministratur tat-Tim tal-ERA Stephen Saliba qal li l-awtorità mhux biss tappoġġja lill-NGOs fit-tmexxija tal-parks permezz ta’ gwida teknika, iżda tgħin ukoll permezz ta’ finanzjament għall-implimentazzjoni ta’ materjal edukattiv għall-pubbliku.

Il-kotba ġew ippubblikati kemm bil-Malti u kemm bl-Ingliż u jistgħu jinxtraw miċ-ċentru tal-viżitaturi tal-Park tal-Majjistral.
