€1 million investment in sustainable projects towards better use of water resources

Reference Number: PR212197, Press Release Issue Date: Dec 08, 2021

Through GiFluid project, Rabat Local Council will benefit from €1 million investment to implement community projects to increase the efficient use of water.

This project is being financed by the programme Interreg Italia – Malta, in conjunction with the Energy and Water Agency, Rabat Local Council together with the University of Catania, the Region Council of Sicily and Aci Castello.

The Energy and Water Agency in collaboration with the Rabat Local Council will rehabilitate St. Dominic’s Square into a recreational space. Through this project, the infrastructure in the area will be upgraded and will also provide space for a reservoir to conserve the runoff water in the area.

This project will also seek to implement another green urban infrastructure, a roof garden on the National Centre for Water Conservation Għajn. In the past four years, this centre serves as an educational centre, where various students were exposed on the importance of water resources. Now, through the GiFluid project, this centre will also serve as a recreational area for families due to its surroundings, which will now be enhanced further by the development of this roof garden.

The development of a water catchment system will serve as a model to analyse the risk of flooding. Eventually this will lead to tests in the application of green solutions.

During the launch, the Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli said “Water resource is highly important, and therefore we have to find practical solutions to safeguard this source. This model will also serve as a tool for other ministries and government entities  to plan and coordinate flood mitigation measures”.

Minister Miriam Dalli added how this model will consolidate a collaboration between entities for the development of key building block of sustainable policies and strategies.

“Sustainability should be ingrained in each and everything we do, and if we want to ensure a sustainable future, future generations should be provided with the necessary tools and knowledge. With this project, we will be involving youth participation in training courses on green urban infrastructure design in Catania. This will help to create and develop a greener mentality among our future generations,” added Minister Dalli.

Minister Miriam Dalli concluded that these projects  reflects the Government’s vision within sustainable development, whilst encouraged for more similar initiatives.

Investiment ta’ €1 miljun fi proġetti sostenibbli relatati mal-ilma

Permezz tal-proġett GiFluid, il-Kunsill Lokali tar-Rabat se jkun allokat €1 miljun biex jiġu implimentati proġetti fil-komunità biex tiżdied l-effiċjenza fl-użu tal-ilma.

Dan il-proġett qed jiġi ffinanzjat taħt il-programm Interegg Italja-Malta. GiFluid qed issir b’ħidma konġunta bejn l-Aġenzija tal-Enerġija u l-Ilma, il-Kunsill Lokali tar-Rabat flimkien mal-Università ta’ Katanja, il-Kunsill Reġjonali ta’ Sqallija u Aci Castello.

B’kollaborazzjoni bejn l-Aġenzija tal-Enerġija u l-Ilma flimkien mal-Kunsill Lokali tar-Rabat, se tkun qed tiġi riabilitata l-Pjazza ta’ San Duminku fi spazju rikreattiv, biex b’hekk tkun tista’ titgawda mir-residenti u minn dawk li jżuru din il-lokalità. Permezz ta’ dan il-proġett, se tissaħħaħ l-infrastruttura u għalhekk se jkun hemm spazju għal reservoir, fejn se jkun qed jinġabar l-ilma li jkun hemm f’dawn l-akwati.

Dan il-proġett se jara li jimplimenta green urban infrastructure, li se jkun roof garden fiċ-Ċentru Nazzjonali għall-Konservazzjoni tal-Ilma Għajn. Matul l-aħħar erba’ snin dan iċ-ċentru serva bħala ċentru edukattiv fejn studenti u tfal ġew esposti b’għarfien fuq l-importanza tar-riżorsa tal-ilma. Issa, b’dan il-proġett, se jservi wkoll ta’ spazju rikreattiv għall-familji u għal dawk li jżuru dan il-post.

Il-proġett pilota GiFluid se jservi bħala mudell fejn se jkun qed jiġi żviluppat bir tal-ilma biex jiġi analizzat ir-riskju ta’ għargħar. Wara, isir eżami biex jiġu applikati soluzzjonijiet iktar ambjentali.

Fit-tnedija tal-proġett, il-Ministru Miriam Dalli qalet, “Ir-riżorsa tal-ilma hija importanti ħafna, għalhekk irridu nsibu soluzzjonijiet u prattiċi biex inkomplu nissalvagwardjaw din ir-riżorsa. Għalhekk, permezz ta’ dan il-mudell, se jkun ta’ għodda biex aktar ministeri u entitajiet governattivi  jkunu jistgħu jippjanaw miżuri biex jitnaqqas l-għargħar”. Il-ministru qalet li dan il-mudell se jgħaqqad diversi entitajiet biex b’hekk jiġu ffurmati strateġiji u policies aktar sostenibbli.

“Iridu naħsbu fil-futur ta’ pajjiżna, u għalhekk irridu nippreparaw ġenerazzjonijiet futuri biex joħorġu b’ideat u b’innovazzjonijiet sostenibbli. B’dan il-proġett se nkunu qed ninvolvu l-parteċipazzjoni taż-żgħażagħ li se jkunu qed jiġu offruta opportunitajiet ta’ taħriġ f’Katanja, fuq infrastruttura iktar ambjentalment sostenibbli. Dan għaliex irridu nrawmu mentalità iktar sostenibbli fil-ġenerazzjonijiet futuri”, spjegat il-Ministru Dalli.

Hi kkonkludiet li proġetti bħal dawn jirriflettu l-viżjoni ta’ dan il-gvern fil-qasam tal-iżvilupp sostenibbli u ħeġġet biex ikun hawn aktar inizjattivi bħal dawn
